Timing belts are rubber and have strong teeth that may interlock with camshaft and crankshaft cogwheels. It is an internal combustion engine component that is responsible for coordinating the rotation of the camshaft and the crankshaft. Polyurethane timing belt allows the engine valves to open and close appropriately during each cylinder’s intake and exhaust strokes.

In an interference engine, the timing belt also serves a crucial function in preventing the piston from impacting the valves. Timing belts are typically toothed belts having teeth on one or both sides of the surface.

What Role Do Timing Belts Play?

The usage of timing belts in an automobile engine is necessary for the machine to function correctly. They serve the purpose of connecting the camshaft of the engine to the crankshaft of the engine. In addition to this, they have control over the vehicle’s valves and pistons. A timing belt is just a strengthened rubber band with teeth or notches on the inner side of the band to break it down into its most basic components.

The engine’s opening and shutting valves are brought into exact synchronisation by a timing belt. When the crankshaft rotates, it starts the timing belt moving in the appropriate direction. After that, the timing belt will spin the camshaft, which will either open or close each valve and allow the pistons to move upward or downward. For instance, four phases occur in four-stroke engines. These phases include the intake phase, the combustion phase, the compression phase, and the exhaust phase. Air and gasoline are sucked into the cylinders as part of the phase known as the intake phase. During this stage, the intake valves are open, while the exhaust valves are closed to prevent air escaping.

The air and fuel are mixed, then compressed before igniting the spark plugs, which take place during the combustion and compression phases. During these two phases, every one of the valves will be closed. The last step is called the exhaust phase, which occurs when residual air and fuel are expelled through the exhaust valve. During this process stage, the intake valves are closed, and the exhaust valves are left open. The timing belt is the component that is responsible for managing the timing of the valves as well as the movement of the pistons during every phase. The timing belt makes it possible for each step to happen in the exact sequence it should.
